Blog : How To Grow Your Confidence

Confidence : it's something most of us are in pursuit of.  The rise of social media and comparisonitis hasn't helped many of us with our confidence: as we compare ourselves to others we deem to be more  “successful” we can feel less self assured.

What can you do?

There isn’t a magic wand that can bestow you with ultimate and unshakeable confidence, but there are things you can start implementing into your life to promote self-belief and gently nurture your confidence levels.

  1.     Visualise a future, confident you

Did you know visualisation helps you achieve your goals? Imagine you're at a 10/10 in terms of your confidence : you're brimming with self belief and now answer these prompts:

 - What other emotions are you feeling?

- What is going on in your body?

- What are you thinking?

- What are you doing?

- How does your life look?

When you're answering these questions focus on the details. You can reflect on where you are on your confidence scale and identify one thing you can do to bring you closer to that 10.

When you visualise that confident version of you then you can imagine how they would act in situations and start to step into that behaviour. As James Clear says "you're being before you're becoming"

  1.     Visualise a past, confident you

If you struggle to look at the future you might want to go back to your past and identify a time when you were at your peak level of confidence. Perhaps, you nailed a job interview, or delivered an amazing presentation or maybe you had that summer feeling and felt happy in your skin. When you've identified a memory reflect on what else was going on for you in your life, how did you build that feeling of confidence?

Now imagine you're feeling that way now : what would you be doing differently? how can you borrow that past confidence to bring into your current life?

  1.     Journaling

Another popular way of increasing confidence is to get clear on what you're thinking and feeling. Journalling can help you to get clarity on your thoughts and emotions so you can decide what you want to do next.

Some prompts which can help:

What is it about the situation that makes you lack confidence?

What could you do to change your feelings?

What can you do to increase your confidence?

Who can help you?

Through really understanding what your feelings are and where they come from, you might discover simple solutions. Perhaps, you discover you’re nervous about a networking event because you won’t know anyone there an easy thing to do is to connect with one or two people before the event. I'm a big fan of taking the small steps as these lead into the compound gains.

  1.   Embody confidence

The way you hold yourself and the way you dress can all have an impact on your confidence. Harvard Professor and Researcher Amy Cuddy tells us how posture and the use of ‘power poses’ (think a Wonder Woman pose), can change how we feel: in a meta-analysis of studies published in 2022 the power poses were seen to increase feelings of confidence and may be why Beyonce is such a fan!

Equally, you can look at people around you who you perceive as being confident: what behaviours can you model from them? You might also want to go back to your 10/10 in confidence and ask yourself how you can start acting in a way that is congruent with this right now?

  1.     Value yourself

This sounds cheesy, but it’s important. Recognise your strengths and positive traits: you may want to do a simple strengths test online if you're not sure what yours are or you can ask 3-5 people who are close to you to share what they think your top 3 strengths are. Start to see yourself as others do and celebrate what you have achieved (when we celebrate our achievements it can also help enhance our well-being).

Equally, practice self care and ensure you get your own needs met : when you show yourself compassion and love it will help you build your confidence.

Remember everyone has confidence wobbles: this doesn't mean you're more or less than anyone else: accept these as part of life and focus on how you can build up to that 10/10 and achieve all the things you want to achieve.

New To Coaching? Listen to recent graduates who were in your position and hear their experiences first hand

" There is a huge amount of support from the teachers on the course and really great support in the sessions... And then you've got this bespoke service from your mentor where you can really get into some detail on your own journey in coaching.   And then the unexpected big element for me is about finding this community of peers who are going through the same journey with different approaches, a real diversity of professions and expertise and ages and so on"                                                                                                    Tess Nixon Speller - Coach & Fundraising Consultant
"It’s opened my eyes actually to all different types of coaching and that was part of the reason why I chose to go on the Optimus course. When you do it in a corporate environment, typically, you come across Grow and some of the other more basic, more transactional type models, whereas having the opportunity to learn about things like positive psychology and neuroscience and transactional analysis and how that all links into how you can approach stuff as a coach has made a huge difference."                      Chris Roberts - Leadership and Team Coach

"The financial impact has been quite significant actually. I am charging way more than I would have been comfortable doing before. I've well and truly more than earned back the cost of the course. So the ROI for me is well worth it. I think as well from a credibility perspective, I am able to work with organisations in a different way and at a different level "                                                         Ruth Wood - Executive and Leadership Coach
"It's an outlay, but I've always been that person who loves learning. You'll make back the money with how much you can charge because you're actually somebody who knows what they’re talking about. You're coming from experience as opposed to just making it up as you go along....I met so many different people who I'm still in touch with some of them and then the fact that you've got the alumni. Why study with Optimus? Here’s what others say about working with us (these are from diploma students)

I’m honestly shocked by how useful this training has been. I really didn't think I needed it, but I’ve totally changed my mind on that now. It was exactly what I need and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to maximise their coaching potential.”

I'd say, yes, it's an investment. And you know, everyone has to think long and hard about where you put your time and your money, but the me. If you want something comprehensive, well rounded, you want an experience to be able to grow as a person, to grow as a coach, to be more business minded, and to have a community of people around you and great trainers and mentors. This for me, hands down is the best training out there. And I think just three months down the line, I don't regret it at all, if anything, I'm happy to sort of encourage other people to jump on it and do it, it's really worth it is more than worth it.”
Nafeeza Towheed
Transformational Therapeutic Coach
I think if you want to be a coach, work as a coach, be successful as a coach, be confident as a coach, then this is the course for you. It's unlike any training that I've ever done before, it's just great. I never worry about coaching someone now. I feel like I always know where to go. I can respond and I don't go in thinking what I am going to ask them. I can be completely curious and open to what they want to do in the session and it works: it is so much better for them and I just love it. I'm so happy to take the full joy out of it.”
